What is a Payment gateway?

What is a Payment gateway?

A payment gateway is an e-commerce service that authorizes payments for e-businesses and online retailers. It is the equivalent of a physical POS (point-of-sale) terminal located in most retail outlets. A merchant account provider (such as AMG)  is typically a separate company from the payment gateway. Some merchant account providers have their own payment gateways but the majority of companies use 3rd party payment gateways.

The gateway usually has 2 components: a) the virtual terminal that can allow for a merchant to securely login and key in credit card numbers or b) have the websites shopping-cart connect to the gateway via an API to allow for real time processing from the merchant’s website.

e-Commerce Credit Card Processing Services

Posted by greenwebdesign on July 15, 2007

e-Commerce Credit Card Processing Services

In order to sell your products over the internet, you will need a merchant account. This merchant account will vary a bit from retail / storefront to internet. The reason being is that an internet transaction does not have the card in the merchants hand to complete the transaction. Instead, the card is in a remote place away from the merchant and unable to swipe the credit card through a credit card terminal. An e_Commerce Processing account is a special account with special pricing to merchants so that it is the least expensive to process a credit card transaction.

E_Commerce grows larger by the day. This is important because the internet is the global medium for information as well as products and goods. You can purchase just about anything on the internet. In order to purchase anything on the internet, the merchant will need a merchant account.

Some ISO’s only offer the merchant account, some offer the merchant account as well as payment gateway with a costly setup or application fee. AMG offers the merchant account and payment gateway with no setup fee or application fee.

AMG currently uses the Authorize.net Payment Gateway. AMG is currently in development of a new Payment Gateway to create a more cost effective solution for merchants. The POZBox will be available in the summer of 2007.
